The Peloponnese peninsula and Athens could easily be considered the heart of Greece
The Mycenaeans, the Ancient Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Venetians and so many others have left their footprints in one of the oldest regions of the world. In this area of southern Greece we can find the traces of Neolithic communities, Mycenaean bronze age palaces, the ruins of the greatest cities of antiquity, Byzantine towns and Venetian castles. It’s a land of myths and legends. A place of heroes, like Hercules or Theseus, and famous historical figures, like Leonidas or Socrates. The rich cultural heritage of the region is evident in its eight UNESCO world heritage sites, six of them in the Peloponnese and two in Athens.
